  • Public Service Loan Forgiveness

    If you don’t qualify for federal student loan forgiveness, you may instead be eligible for discharge and cancellation. The government offers federal student loan forgiveness to public service employees and teachers. Discharge and cancellation are available to people in other situations. If you qualify for federal student loan forgiveness, discharge or cancellation, you will not have to repay all or part of your loan.

  • Teacher Loan Forgiveness

    Teachers who have been teaching full-time in a low-income elementary or secondary school for five consecutive years and are also new borrowers might be eligible for federal student loan forgiveness. Under the Teacher Loan Forgiveness program, borrowers could get up to $17,500 forgiven on both subsidized and unsubsidized loans.
  • Loan Discharge

    When your student loan is discharged, that means you don’t have to pay off the remainder of the loan. Loans may be discharged for any of the following reasons:

    • Permanent disability
    • Death
    • Bankruptcy
    • The school closed
    • False certification of student eligibility
    • Unauthorized payment
    • Unpaid refunds
  • Loan Cancellation

    Cancellation applies to student loans under the Perkins Loan Program. These cancellations are available to people who perform specific types of public service or have certain occupations. All or parts of the loan can be canceled each year of service or employment, depending on the type of loan.
